Meals and Snacks

A varied and nutritious diet is vital to aid healthy development.

We promote this at Skallywags through a home-cooked menu made from fresh ingredients and using local suppliers. This includes a breakfast snack, cooked lunch and light tea, with plenty of fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks throughout the day.

We encourage the children to be involved in meal times, helping to lay the table and support self-service meaning children make independent choices about their meals. This promotes the social aspect of eating together and helping each other - making it more like family dinner!

We also promote good hygiene practices and each child has a nursery toothbrush that they are encouraged to use after dinner as well as having discussions about the 'dentist' and what is 'good' for our teeth.

Please contact us to discuss your child’s individual needs, we can cater for all types of diets / allergies. Our chef is a very experienced cook and can create a meal plan around your requirements. Vegetarian option served daily.

Our Menu changes on a 4 week rotation and is displayed in the nursery entrance hall.

We will work with your routines and plans for weaning. All of our homemade meals can be pureed as required.

 Cooking Lessons and Planned Activities

As part of our planning and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) we plan for cooking lessons with children. Children are encouraged to help write shopping lists of ingredients, take a trip to the local shops to buy their ingredients then cook/prepare the meal of their choice using all the ingredients they have bought. We cook different things from main meals to puddings and sides such as coleslaw.
